Blessed Sacrament Primary School

Music

At Blessed Sacrament School we contract Music Education Islington (MEI), which supports all of the requirements of the National Curriculum and gives children access to a wide range of musical experiences.

The pupils receive weekly music lessons by an MEI teacher, who teaches the children singing, composition and rhythm, covering a broad range of musical genres.

Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 learn violin, viola or cello in weekly group lessons, delivered by MEI peripatetic teachers. Our instrumental lessons offer our students the opportunity to develop in self-confidence cooperating in a creative group learning environment.

Blessed Sacrament students also have the opportunity to learn any instrument of their choice at the Music Education Islington Music Centre. We are proud to have three students on music scholarships currently learning trombone, viola and violin.

Our students have extensive music performance opportunities throughout the term both in school assemblies, end of term concerts and church services. Our students also take part in the annual Music Education Islington Big Sing at The Union Chapel and this year, KS2 also took part in a composition project with London Sinfonietta, performing at Union Chapel their own compositions and attending a concert at the Southbank Centre.

Our KS2 school choir rehearses after school on a Thursday and is led by our Class Music Teacher, Szofia MacDougall. The choir have performed at special events in and outside of school. Recent highlights include the Winter Sing at King’s Place, School Christmas Fair, end of term school concerts and services at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Intent

This curriculum is designed to harness the wide-ranging opportunities to transform the thinking, appreciation and behaviours of young people to become culturally competent citizens. By taking a highly practical approach to addressing the key skills and concepts addressed on the National Curriculum and beyond, we prepare our pupils to develop a lifelong love and appreciation of music. We will provide creative opportunities for pupils to find their own voice and develop discipline and confidence through high quality rehearsal and exploration of sounds. We provide a sequence of concepts showing clear progression of skills and knowledge in Music. It provides a framework from which relevant learning experiences can be planned, to broaden the horizons and experiences of Blessed Sacrament pupils, to enable them to recognise and take advantage of opportunities available to them.

Implementation
The breadth and depth of each of aspect of Music is mapped out to show the expected progression through the milestones (KS1, Lower KS2, Upper KS2). Lessons are planned with reference to the relevant threshold concepts and curriculum drivers. Threshold concepts will be repeated and revisited, applied to a variety of different musical situations when addressing the breadth of the curriculum, to develop greater depth of learning.

Impact Assessment for learning will be used throughout the teaching of this curriculum to ensure that progress in understanding is developed from basic, advancing to deep, with reference to the threshold concepts in each subject area. Opportunities for the pupils to apply their knowledge and understanding to performance, composition and appraising activities will be provided throughout the year and successes celebrated and shared. This will be measured through.
