Attendance

Good attendance at school is the single most important factor in ensuring that young people have the maximum life chances - attendance is strongly linked to educational achievement.  Promoting positive school attendance is therefore everyone's responsibility. When a child attends school on a regular basis, they take an important step towards reaching their full potential, and are given the greatest opportunity to learn new things and develop their skills.

According to the Department for Education (DfE), if schools can improve their attendance by 1%, they will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment.  Children who miss school frequently can fall behind with their work and do less well in exams.  The more time a child spends around other children, whether in the classroom or as part of a school team or club, the more chance they have of making friends and feeling included, boosting social skills, confidence and self esteem.

School starts at 9:00am and all pupils should be on time to help them get the maximum benefit from school.  Pupils arriving after the register has been taken must report to the office. If a pupil is prevented from attending school by reason of sickness or other unavoidable cause, it is the responsibility of the parents to notify the school of the pupil's absence.  This should be by telephone on the first day of absence and confirmed in writing.  Parents should avoid, if possible, making medical/dental appointments for their child during school hours. The Education Welfare Officer comes in regularly to check registers and follow up any unexplained absence or persistent lateness.
